How Quenelle works

Quenelle teaches a subject on your commute, as a course rather than a playlist.

Pick a course and press play, or ask for one. Our own courses are written and recorded in advance, so there is nothing to wait for. Type a subject of your own and Quenelle reads the open research on it, writes a conversation between two to four voices from facts it can quote word for word, records it, and tells you when it is ready — usually within ten minutes. If it cannot find enough research published as readable text, it says so and makes nothing, rather than guess.
It downloads once and plays from your phone. A commute has tunnels; a course that stops in one is a failure, so the audio lives on the device rather than streaming.
You can interrupt. Tap to ask a question out loud mid-course and you get a short answer grounded in the same material, then the conversation carries on.
It remembers where you are. Close the app mid-drive and it picks up at the second you left off, including if you skipped back to hear something again.

Subscription

Listening is free for the featured courses, in full. Asking questions and creating courses are the subscription.

Asking questions out loud and creating your own courses need Quenelle Monthly — $29.99 a month, with a one-week free trial for new subscribers. It covers up to 500 spoken questions a month and up to ten courses of your own a month; past those, the extras pause until the month or the day turns, and everything you already have keeps playing.
Manage or cancel in your Apple Account settings — it renews automatically until you turn that off. Cancelling keeps your access until the period you have paid for ends.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Changed phones, or reinstalled? Open Settings → Subscription and tap Restore purchases.

Account and data

Delete your account in the app under Settings. This immediately erases the content your account holds — your profile, the questions you asked and the answers, and where you had got to — and revokes every sign-in session, so the account stops working right away. We keep your account record and your subscription record in a deactivated state, to prevent abuse and to keep a billing audit trail. Signing in again with the same provider reopens the account with its content erased. To have the retained record purged, email us at james@tryquenelle.com.
The audio of what you say is transcribed and then discarded; we do not keep the recording. We do keep the text of your questions and the answers, so a follow-up question can be answered in the context of what you already asked. They are not shown back to you anywhere in the app. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture, and the Terms of Service for the agreement.

Troubleshooting

The app can't hear my question: make sure microphone access is granted (iOS Settings → Quenelle → Microphone). Asking is press-to-talk — tap to start, tap again when you're done — so nothing is listening between questions.
I need to concentrate: tap pause. Nothing is recorded or spoken while it's paused, and it picks up where you left off.
"Not ready yet": that course has not been published — its audio isn't available. Pick one that is, or write to us.
My course was refused: the subject did not have enough research published as readable text for us to build from honestly. The refusal says exactly what was found and what was missing. Try a broader or more established subject.
I subscribed but questions are still refused: open Settings → Subscription and tap Restore purchases. If it still refuses, email us with your sign-in email.
